what's the proper way to re-support a front porch? | |
my 6 year old victorian farmhouse has a front porch attached to the house that runs the width of the house and extends about 5 feet out with a roof overhead and rails. the builder supported the front of the porch with 6 - 4x4's (pressure treated), sitting on concrete blocks as opposed to cement pile-ons, 42" down.
popping the deck boards and digging installing pile-on's with a beam supporting the porch joists seems to be the best solution, however, one of the contractors is telling me the deck of the porch should be lifted 1.5", pile-on's installed, then the deck lowered.
advise as to what is appropriate to do? the porch is level and no sinking has occured yet.
