STEP BY STEP ON HOW TO BUILD A PAVER PATIO

1. Plan Your Idea on Constructing the Paver Area

We all agree that old quote saying, “If we fail to plan, we plan to fail”. Somehow, it happens the same to anything, including the moment when you are going to construct thing in your home area.

Adding a paver patio in your house is a big deal since once it is installed, it takes more time, energy, and money to undo it if it does not come out as what you wish. Therefore, making a plan is the best way to avoid that unnecessary event.

You can start by beginning with the end in mind. Explore ideas from the books or internet about paver patio ideas. There are tons of inspirations you can find, and simply pick the one that suits your taste the most. Once you decide, start to adjust that inspiration to the real condition that you have inside the house.

Measure the size, including width and length, so you know how much material you need. Also, you need to plan about which material you are going to need. Different price will give you different quality. Different size will give you different feel.

2. Clear Up the Patio Paver Area and Spread Landscape Fabric

After making the fix plan, you can start clearing up your patio paver area from any vegetation and grass. You also need to excavate around 4 inches of soil. A sod cutter is suggested to speed up the excavation.

Make sure that you make flat area, so later on, you can put any materials there in balance. After they are all set, you can continue spreading landscape fabric, one layer is enough, over the soil that you have prepared.

The purpose of spreading this fabric is to make sure the sand you are going to use as the base will not mix with the soil. The mixture will make the base unstable and your patio paver tend to easily broken. As a suggestion, find the non-woven fabric which is permeable. 20-year life span fabric is recommended as the part of your patio paver.

3. Put Paver Mat Panels on Beds of Leveled Sands

Following the previous step, you may spread out a ¾ inches average depth of sand layer. Make sure you screed it so it can be a properly sloped, flat, and stable surface. Rather than buying sandbox sand, you are suggested to use the fill sand or the all-purpose one.

If you decide to buy some bags of sand in the market, you would better consider one 50-lb bag of sand for each 8 square feet of patio you are going to have. The portion of sand will affect on the stability of your paver patio. Therefore, the right portion will help things right.

After spreading the sand layer, continue the layer by laying paver mat panels. Make sure there is no space of sand that is not covered by the mat panels. The purpose of it is to avoid any continuous seams.




If you, perhaps, have a plan, to set different thickness of stones for your paver patio, you are suggested to spread a layer of sand after the panel, so it will allow you to level those stones.

4. Install Some Paver Edging and Finalize It by Installing the Pavers

Setting the base might be a little complicated and challenging. However, having the stable base is promising for letting you have a long-last paver patio. After installing all layers in which mat panels as the top layer, now you must install the paver edging.

You can attach those paver edging to paver mats you have previously laid. The purpose of having this paver edging is to make sure the base become stable and keep the pavers later on to stay in its place whenever there are things stepping on it.

Last, get the pavers you have prepared it and install it right away. Pay attention to the plan you have made for the paver patio, so you will not make any mistakes on this last step. Having paver edging before the paver itself will protect layers, so it will keep everything on its place.




After installing everything you need to install, it is better to give some trials on stepping the paver patio. This step is also important to make sure there will be no issues. Even though there is any issue, you will still have those materials and stuff with you, so you can fix it right away.
